Lorsque Fernand Léger séjourna aux Etats-Unis entre 1940 et 1945, il rencontra des architectes et des mécènes qui lui offrirent la possibilité d'adapter sa peinture à une échelle monumentale. De retour en France en 1945, il se consacra à ses nombreuses commandes pour l'ONU, l'Université de Caracas, l'Hôpital de Saint-Lô ou encore Gaz de France. Deux mosaïstes commencèrent à travailler à ses côtés dans la réalisation de ces projets: Nino et Heidi Mélano. Ce fut à la demande de Georges Bauquier que Heidi Mélano, utilisant une palette de couleurs restreinte, exécuta de nombreuses mosaïques d'après des tableaux de Léger datant des années 1920. Les grandes figures traitées alors par Léger dans ses tableaux, telles que ses personnages féminins que l'on rencontre par exemple dans La Lecture d'après une oeuvre de 1923, ou Femme au bouquet de 1924, ou encore le présent lot de 1927, s'adaptaient particulièrement bien au changement d'échelle de la toile à la mosaïque.

Upon his return to France in 1945, he dedicated himself to a number of commissions, including those from the United Nations, The University of Caracas, the Hospital of Saint-Lô and the Gaz de France. Two master mosaicists worked with Léger on these projects: Nino and Heidi Mélano.
