A VERY FINE SOUTH GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK BELT PISTOL (PUFFER)

With swamped barrel formed in two stages and cut with bands of leaf ornament over the muzzle and over the girdles at the breech, plain flat lock, flat wheel-cover pricked with a radiating pattern, safety-catch, the pan formed with a projecting engraved hemispherical top flat incorporating a flush-fitting sliding cover, fruitwood full stock profusely inlaid over its entire surface with a close-set pattern of engraved horn ball flowers spiralling in clusters on interlaced tendrils, involving small engraved horn plaques and flower heads, including a leaping deer opposite the lock and a demon mask behind the barrel tang, all set within beaded segmental lines, compressed spherical pommel en suite and fitted with horn flower head cap, iron trigger, iron side-plate carrying a slender moulded belt hook, ramrod-pipe and fore-end cap each of engraved horn, and later horn-tipped ramrod (small pieces of inlay replaced).
