A FRENCH FLINTLOCK POCKET PISTOL BY BOUTET, DIRECTEUR ARTISTE, MANUFACTURE À VERSAILLES
circa 1804-1810
With very short turn-off barrel engraved with differing bands of ornament at either end, the barrel and breech numbered 2, the latter signed on the underside 'Boutet Directeur Artiste', finely engraved box-lock action decorated with a trophy-of-arms on the left and a trophy of the Liberal Arts on the right, inscribed on the top 'Manufacture' and 'à Versailles' left and right of the cock (the top jaw a working replacement), the underside decorated with a neo-classical device involving an eagle perched on a globe, engraved sliding stud safety-catch also locking the steel, concealed folding trigger, and walnut butt carved with an olive branch over the back and with a scale pattern over the sides.
