Lot Essay

This surtout de table, suitably cast with Bacchic ornament appropriate to a dining-room or room of entertainment, is characteristic of the oeuvre of Thomire et Cie. Established by the celebrated ciseleur-doreur Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843), who was elected maître in 1772, the firm was carried on by his sons until 1843, and specialized in exceptional bronzes d'ameublement. A related surtout by Thomire, with identical pierced bacchic-inspired decoration is illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, fig. 5.16.15. Another similar example was sold anonymously, Christie's London, 9 December 2004, lot 43.
