A PRESIDENT LENDS FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO HIS BROTHER. "It will perhaps sometimes occur in the course of business that my brother Col. H.D. Pierce may wish to borrow sums of money for short periods. If he should present his note to you for one, two, three, or four hundred dollars will you let have money & consider me as surety on the note."

By his father's second marriage, Pierce had four brothers and two sisters; several of his brothers including Henry D. Pierce held military rank. Autograph letters of Pierce while President are relatively uncommon.
