Bâtard-Montrachet--Vintage 1996
Côte de Beaune, Albert Morey
Three scuffed labels
In original carton
"The semi-retired Albert Morey, Bernard and Jean-Marc Morey's father, continues to produce his Batard-Montrachet from a parcel of old and ailing vines (4 barrels - 100 cases in 1996). I was stunned by this wine as I have never tasted anything quite like it. Aromas of candied grapefruits are followed by hyper-concentrated, bright, yet viscous layers of tangy and sugar-coated citrus fruits. This offering's ripeness, power, extraction, and balance denote an outstanding wine but it appeared so monolithic and was so lacking in harmony and complexity when I tasted it that I found myself perplexed as to its actual quality. Will its enormous concentration and ripeness evolve into a masterpiece or will it remain disjointed and single-faceted?" Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #116 (Apr 1998)
