The present work is an illustration to Bulwer Lytton's travel book The Pilgrims of the Rhine, published in 1834 and including twenty-one illustrations in total. The town depicted is Kaub with the ruined castle of Gutenfels above it. The turreted castle in midstream is Pfalzgrafenstein, a prison for political offenders.
