Lot Essay
Simpson spent most of his working life abroad, often recording war scenes. He was sent to the Baltic by Colnaghi's to record the beginnings of the Crimean War and to India in the aftermath of the 1857 Mutiny. He returned to India in 1875 in the company of the Prince of Wales.
The Gaumukh (Cow's Mouth) Glacier in the Gangotri region of Uttarakhand in northern India is also thought to be the source of the holy Ganges River. The present watercolour depicts a view looking South up the Gangotri glacier in Garhwal. The mountains depicted beyond are from left to right Bhagirathi North, Bhagirathi central, Bhagirathi South, and Shivling.
