Lot Essay

The present drawings are studies for two of the three oil panels in a John Broadwood & Sons pianoforte, 1873, which was designed and decorated by Alma Tadema (fig. 1). The keyboard lid opens to reveal the panels, the central panel depicts a seated musician. This piano was in Alma-Tadema's possession until his death in 1912 and was sold among the contents of his house, 34 Grove End Road.
