Lot Essay

Accompanied by a note in H.R.H. The Princess Margaret's hand, reading 'Almost first bit of jewelry given to Mum; by Venetia James. Given to me 10th Feb. 1945.'

H.M. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, was christened Elizabeth Angela Marguerite on 23 September 1900, in Walden Bury, Hertfordshire. The only two godparents who signed the register were her father's sister, Lady Maud Bowes-Lyon, and her mother's second cousin, Mrs Arthur James, the former Venetia Cavendish-Bentinck. Venetia had married into the James family, which had long-standing royal connections, and as part of the 'Marlborough House Set' had been close friends of H.M. King Edward VII and H.M. Queen Alexandra. As a christening present from Mrs James to her seven week old goddaughter, this bee brooch was one of the first jewels ever owned by the H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

More from Jewellery and Faberge, from the Collection of H.R.H The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon
