Lot Essay

The present work is an unusual example of an oil painting by John Varley, who throughout his career worked almost entirely in watercolour, exhibiting his work at the Society of Painters in Water-Colours, of which he was a founding member. Varley was a prolific artist, his studies of the English landscape ranging from Welsh scenery to views of the Thames at Millbank and Lambeth.
