Château Figeac--Vintage 1970
Saint-Emilion, 1er grand cru classé
Good appearance. Lot 653 levels: three base of neck and nine top-shoulder. Lot 654 levels: ten top and two upper-shoulder
In original wooden cases
Tasting Note: An excellent 1970. At Figeac, the cépage mix is more or less equally divided between Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and unusually in St-Émilion, Cabernet Sauvignon. Figeac featured pretty prominently in my notes in the mid-1970s. It almost made my equal top marks at the 'great Danes' tasting of '70s and I noted its glorious, uplifting fragrance and taste throughout the 1980s. An amalgam of conflicts, delicacy and rip-roaring fruit, vigorous, ripe tannins. Beginning to show signs of gentle decline at Gidleigh Park in Devon in 1994, yet the following year almost rumbustious, very earthy, touch of iron and supporting tannin. Last tasted June 1995 ***** M.B.
