ATTRIBUTED TO THE PAINTER OF LONDON F1, CIRCA 380 B.C.
The obverse with nude Dionysos seated on his himation, holding a large foliate branch in his left hand, facing an elaborately-draped maenad seated to the left, holding a phiale in her left hand, a winged Nike flying above, a partially-draped maenad behind the god, her head turned back, the scene framed on either side by nude satyrs, that to the right holding a phiale in his left hand, that to the left holding a thyrsos in his right hand, a tympanum below; the reverse with three draped youths, two windows above; a band of meander with checkered squares below the scenes, laurel above, dotted ovolo around the handle-plates, details in added white

Lot Essay

The Nike, whose flesh is in added white, was originally intended by the artist to be depicted draped, the splaying hem left reserved and preserving some folds in dilute glaze.
