Originally serving as a vessel handle ornament, of hammered sheet with a plaster backing, his face resembling that of an old satyr with a pug nose, and a full radiating beard and moustache, his articulated lidded eyes beneath exaggerated brows, a fillet of ivy with a central disk in his wavy hair, preserving the root of one curving goat horn at the top of his head
