Villa Sainte-Anne stood on a steep yellow bank overlooking a lagoon on the outskirts of Martigues and on the way to Marseilles. Augustus John and Dorelia first stayed there in 1910, after which they used it many times over the next eighteen years. The house and its location gave John inspiration and suited his and his family's way of life. In April 1910, he wrote, 'I am installed in this little house with a batch of family and hard work. The weather has been glorious and we have been out of doors all day for weeks' (see Augustus John, Michael Holroyd, 1996, p. 318).
