Lot Essay

Keith Bell comments, 'In 1922 Spencer joined Richard Carline, his brothers Sydney and George, sister Hilda, and a cousin of the family May Piggott, on a painting expedition to Yugoslavia. Richard Carline informed the writer (November 1979) that the trip was inspired by illustrations in the National Geographic, and Spencer's wish to return to the region where he had done his war service. The party travelled across Europe, stopping for five days in Vienna where they visited the art galleries. Once in Yugoslavia they went to Sarajevo, Mostar, Ragusa, Cataro, Montenegro, Padorizza and Lake Scutari. Then they returned to Ragusa before going to Split where they caught a boat to Trieste; from there they travelled back to England overland to Munich and Cologne' (see Stanley Spencer: A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, London, 1992, pp. 407-8).
