People handing in their crosses; study for the mural at Burghclere Chapel
inscribed 'drawing for Resurrection of soldiers in Macedonia./In the centre is Christ. The soldiers are so con-/vinced of the meaning of the cross that they find/peace in the study & contemplation of it. They/study it as calmly as we might study twice one/and two, only the fact of the cross & the under-/standing of it brings rejoicing and love. That is/why some of the men in this drawing are em-/bracing & kissing it. In this picture the cross is/meant to symbolise the fact that nothing is/lost whose sacrifice has been right.'
