Lot Essay

Harlaxton Manor near Grantham in Lincolnshire was built in the 1830s for George de Ligne Gregory and designed by the architect Anthony Salvin, who at the time was just thirty-two. John Piper produced a screenprint of this subject entitled Harlaxton (Blue) in 1977 (see O. Levinson, Quality and Experiment: The Prints of John Piper A Catalogue Raisonné 1923-91, London, 1996, no. 270).
