A MAGNIFICENT PRIVATE COLLECTION OF RARE, DOMAINE DE LA ROMANEE-CONTI BURGUNDY, VINTAGES 1945 TO 1983
The following lots (402 to 427) have been recently removed from a perfect, temperature-controlled country house cellar in Southern England where the bottles have lain undisturbed for many years and now lying in Twickenham, Middlesex (EHD)
La Tâche Grand Cru--Vintage 1945
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Very, very slight signs of seepage. Bin-soiled label. Level 6.5cms. below base of cork
Tasting note: Though the note is old, it was such a superb wine that I felt it worth mentioning. First noted in 1961 at a dinner at home I gave for Alain de Vogüé (of Veuve Clicquot) and then chairman, George McWatters. It was hugely impressive, but only starting to open up. Twenty-two years later, the oldest and outstandingly the greatest of 26 vintages of La Tâche arranged by Aubert de Villaine for a book Christie's were proposing to commission. The most notable facet was its depth of colour, not the usual unconvincing mature Pinot; more importantly, its extraordinary volume of scents, exuding power, unravelling relentlessly; rich, great length and the great Burgundy hallmark, the "peacock's tail" opening up in the mouth.
Not tasted since May 1983 but unforgettably. ***** M.B.
