Romanée-Conti Grand Cru--Vintage 1978
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Bottle no. 2023. Very slightly stained label. Level 2.5cms. below base of cork
Tasting note: Magnificent. First tasted at the Domaine in 1983, two bottles, slight variation due to the temperature, one just bought up from the cool cellar. Fairly deep; harmonious but restrained; rich, massively constructed, the colder bottle seemed drier and spicier. Development scarcely budging after a further two year, fragrant, complete, fruit-packed. More bottle age needed. Then a leap of 15 years, less deep, a "classic", singed leather, "beetroot" Pinot nose which, after only 20 minutes in the glass, opened up fragrantly and flagrantly, great richness and depth; sweet, wonderful, mouthfilling flavour, elegant, dry finish. Years of life ahead. At Loggerheads, Len Evan' impressive erection in the Hunter Valley in September 2000: a deep, yet exotic bouquet; medium sweet, full, soft - a wine with extra dimensions. Most recently, bottle no. 001256 imported by Domaine Chandon. The first and youngest of 11 classic vintages of Romanée-Conti: medium-pale, lively looking, open yellow-amber rim; sweet, rich, lovely fragrance, pure mature "beetroot" varietal bouquet that opened up in the glass, soft fruit, whiff of raspberry; also sweet on the palate, full bodied (yet a moderate 13 alcohol), interesting texture, peppery acidity and an upturned, almost spritz finish. Last tasted at Wilfred Jaeger's Sunday DRC lunch, March 2002 ***** Drink now to 2012. M.B.
