The Vintage: Close run by the '34 now, but unquestionably the outstanding vintage in this difficult decade. Growing conditions near to ideal thanks to warm weather from May throughout the summer. If anything, there was too much sun and too little rain, the welcome sprinkling in September being insufficient to swell the grapes. The harvest began on the 27th in excellent conditions. The crop was small, roughly half that of the '34, the grapes more concentrated and tannic; this enabled the best wines to keep extraordinarily well. M.B.
