Lot Essay

The general cargo steamer Keemun was built by Workman, Clark & Co. at Belfast in 1902 and although ordered by the Chinese Mutual Steam Navigation Company, was acquired on the stocks by Alfred Holt's Blue Funnel Line when it absorbed its competitor's fleet after a take-over. Registered at 9,067 tons gross (5,727 net) and measuring 482 feet in length with a 58 foot beam, Keemun spent twenty-one years in service - mostly conveying deck passengers from Indonesia and Malaysia to Jeddah for the Hadj - until scrapped in Japan in 1933.
