Lot Essay
A study for one of the angels on the right of Allori's Ascension of Christ of 1581 in Santa Maria della Carmine, Pisa, S. Lecchini Giovannoni, Alessandro Allori, Turin, 1991, no. 79, fig. 186. The present study, presumably of a garzone, is close in pose and lighting to the figure in the painting, only differing is in the elaboration of the drapery, such as the addition of a billowing fold behind. The drawing's sharp contrast of light and shade, suggested by the highlight down the nose, is accentuated in the painting; there the only source of light is the Risen Christ, with the figures in the lower register almost completely in shadow. The only drawing recorded by Lecchini Giovannoni for the painting is a study for the figure of Saint Peter in the Muse Baron Martin, Chteau de Gray in France.
