The following 92 lots are from The Estate Of Clark Gable. Property from Gable's Estate was first offered through these rooms in 1996, including Gable's Academy Award for It Happened One Night, 1934 which made a record price at that time of $607,500. These pieces are the last remaining pieces from the Estate and include items of particular sentimental value that the vendor did not feel able to part with in 1996. Now he feels the time has come to share these treasured items with Clark Gable's many fans so that they can be cherished and enjoyed by those that loved him.
The majority of the furniture and objects were removed from Clark Gable's ranch in Encino, California that he bought with Carole Lombard following their marriage in 1939. The ranch was formerly owned by Raoul Welsh and whilst Gable was busy filming Gone With The Wind, Lombard decorated their new home, dubbed "The House Of Two Gables". The archive photographs illustrated were probably taken for an article published in Photoplay, October, 1940 entitled How Clark Gable and Carole Lombard Live. Gable and Lombard lived at the ranch in tranquility until Lombard's tragic death in 1942. Gable stayed at the ranch when he returned from serving during World War II in Europe. When he married Kay Spreckels in 1955, they bought another home in a development in Bermuda Dunes, near Palm Springs, but continued to visit the ranch. Upon Gable's death, Kay lived at the ranch until it was sold in 1973.
