The pose of the sitter is directly related to Thomas Hudson's portrait of Anne Thistlethwayte in his group portrait The Thistlethwayte Family, sold at Sotheby's, London, March 12, 1986, lot 41 (see also the catalogue of the exhibition, Manners and Morals, London, The Tate Gallery, Oct. 15, 1987-Jan. 3, 1988, p. 223, no. 208 illustrated).
