A large Japanese Imari dish, 19th century
painted in the centre with two confronting phoenix framed by cartouches enclosing flowers reserved on diaper ground, encircled by a wide band of petal panels reserved on cash ground variously enclosing a dragon pursuing the flaming pearl, cranes, birds on peony branches, and boys at play, the reverse with a foliated peach and peony scroll and a four-character mark -- 22¼in. (56.5cm.) diam.
