BERNOULLI, Daniel (1700-1782). Hydrodynamica, sive de viribus et motibus fluidorum commentarri. Strassburg: Johann Heinrich Decker for Johann Reinhold Dulssecker, 1738.
4o (257 x 200 mm). Title-page printed in red and black. Engraved vignette on title-page, 12 folding engraved plates by Johann Martin Weis. (Some minor browning and staining.) Contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt (early rebacking, worn at edges).
FIRST EDITION of Bernoulli's most famous work. His Hydrodynamica, a term he himself introduced, contains his formulae for calculating the velocity, duration and quantity of liquid issuing from an opening in a container. It also contains chapters on water oscillations, a theory of machinery, and an important section which introduces his kinetic gas theory. The penultimate chapter shows Bernoulli's famous equation, now used in hydraulics and fluid dynamics. Norman 215.
