FIRST EDITION, journal issue. In August 1781, Herschel observed through his telescope something other than a fixed star. At first assuming it to be a comet, observations by other astronomers determined it to be a planet. Named Uranus, Herschel became famous worldwide as the first recorded discoverer of a planet.
