TOLKIEN, John Ronald Reuel (1892-1973). Autograph postcard signed, to J.L.N. O'Loughlin, Merton College, Oxford letterhead, 18 January 1948, 12mo, card written on both sides, with envelope.
'I am either tired or disgruntled and think Oxford would be a grand place to get away from!'. On the first day of term following the Christmas holidays, Professor Tolkien writes to his friend, the historian O'Loughlin, thanking him for his Christmas parcel. He praises a colleague, but finds 'things gloomy in the extreme'. A fine example of Tolkien's neat and decorative hand.
