APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED. Dodgson sends some unspecified material to Miss Willets whilst he gets more copies of 'daughters of Eve' printed. Miss Willets was the stepdaughter of James Legge (1815-1897), the Sinologist and missionary, who headed the London Missionary Society's house in Hong Kong from 1843 to 1873. He married his second wife, Hannah Mary Willets in 1859, and later became Professor of Chinese at Oxford, renowned for his translations of the Chinese classics.
Charles Dodgson had first met Miss Willets at a dinner party given by the Legges in Febrary 1879, and it was on this occasion that he arranged for her to be photographed in Japanese costume (see M.N. Cohen, The Letters of Lewis Carroll, 1979, vol.I, p.344n).
