Lot Essay
In 1908 Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida returned again to Valencia. Here he was especially happy, particularly when accompanied by his beloved wife and children. Having been orphaned as a child, Sorolla was determined to create with his wife and children the family life that he had never had. His wife Clotilde and his three children María, Joaquín and Elena were often his inspiration and appear many times as the models in his most sensitive works.
Sorolla celebrates both the young and old at work and at play; in Niños en el mar (Playa de Valencia) we see the carefree innocence of childhood in the energetic play of the young boys in the surf. The choice of soft olive and almond tones in the water perfectly communicates the extraordinary glow of a moment during a Valencian afternoon.
