Gerdts, this work, Sarah Peale's "only located flower painting" is distinguished within the context of nineteenth century American still life painting "not only because it's a very attractive work by an artist relatively rare in her still-life production, but also because it is, to my knowledge, the only still life, so far, to emerge from her many years resident in Saint Louis, ... [and it is] the only flower picture by any of her generation of professional artists among the Peale family."
