Grand Etteilla III, circa late 19th century, France, card maker unknown, 78 of 78 cards, chromolithography, neatly bound in burgundy Moroccan leather book by Townsend of Sheffield, spine reads, "L'ORACLE DES DAMES, 78 CARTES TAROTS." The imagery closely resembles subsequent Grand Etteilla III Tarot decks, but the engravings are different as are some card titles, cards are numbered 1 to 78, full length figures, card titles appear only on the sides of each card, the top and bottom of each card reads, "Droit" and "Renverse" respectively, card number 1 reads, "Le Chaos," 2 "La Lumiere," 3 "Les Plantes," 4 "Le Ciel," 8 "Repos," 15 "Le Magicien," and 78 "Le Fou." Cards are square corners, full gilt edged. Backs are marbled green on creme background. Card size 4 15/16 in. (12.4 cm.) high, 2 7/16 in. (6.2 cm.) wide, book size 5 3/16 in. (13 cm.) high, 3 1/4 in. (8 cm.) wide. Provenance: Captain H. E. Rimington Wilson, Brotherhood Hall, purchased Christie's, November 24, 1971, lot 337. Slightly worn.
