Mauger Euchre Deck, circa 1872, New York, Victor E. Mauger, 33 of 33 cards including the special Mauger joker depicting a popular stage comic of the era. Mauger was born in England and emigrated to the U.S. in 1855 to set up business as an importer of metal goods. Commencing in 1887, Mauger imported playing cards from the Chas. Goodall range. By the early 1870s, Goodall manufactured a special Euchre pack especially for America with a Goodall ace of spades and the unique, multi-colored joker seated before a table, wearing a flesh head cap and depicting a wolf on his breast. By 1873, Mauger was manufacturing his own cards to compliment the Goodall line which he dropped in 1876 due to high import duties. Double-ended courts, no indices, square corners. Ace of spades is ornately engraved with elves and reads, "Goodall, London, New York, initials V E M, and the name Victor E. Mauger, New York." Backs are maroon and pink floral and a geometric pattern within a border. Partial original box. Some minor foxing, otherwise in generally fine condition. Dawson, 17, U19.
