Formé de quatre plaques incisées d'un texte inscrit en caractères chinois avec sa traduction en écriture mongole au revers, décrivant un événement historique ayant eu lieu sous le règne de l'Empereur Daoguang: à l'issue de la campagne victorieuse de pacification du Xinjiang (Nord-Est de la Chine), la huitième année de son règne, une cérémonie fut célébrée en l'honneur de sa mère, l'Impératrice douairière, afin de lui attribuer un 'nom glorieux' en signe de reconnaissance pour sa vertu qui apporta la paix au pays; le livre est daté du onzième mois de la huitième année du règne de l'Empereur et annonce donc la cérémonie qui se déroula la neuvième année conformément à ce qu'indiquent les annales de la dynastie ; petits chocs et usures

Lot Essay

The content of the book records the 'adding glorifying names' (shang hui hao) of Daoguang emperor's mother. The ceremony would normally happen when some important event took place and there was a national wide celebration, in this case, the pacification of Xinjiang. Part of the ceremony was to give 'glorious names' to the dowager empress in order to reinforce the fact that it was her virtue which brought peace to the land. The pacification of Xinjiang happened in the 8th year of Daoguang's reign and the ceremony is recorded the 9th year in the Qing documents. It means that this book, which is dated the 11th month of the 8th year of Daoguang's reign has been made at the end of the 8th year in preparation of the ceremony at the beginning of the 9th year.
