A PAIR OF WEDDING ICONS
RUSSIAN, 19TH CENTURY
The Iverskaya Mother of God and Christ the Saviour, are realistically painted and covered by metal oklads with silver and gold-plated details and cloisonne enamelled haloes. According to the Russian tradition, during the wedding ceremony, children whose hands are veiled with embroidered linen hold two icons, one of Christ and the other of the Mother and Child. During the service the icons are blessed, they become the couple's "wedding icons" and are given a place of high honour in their home.
