AN ANTIQUE RUSSIAN LAPIS LAZULI AND DIAMOND BROOCH, RETAILED BY BOLIN
Designed as a lapis lazuli cylinder and drop connected by a gold and diamond-set rope
In original fitted case stamped 'C.E. Bolin, supplier to the Imperial Court, St. Petersburg, Moscow with Imperial warrant', inventory sticker of Bolin ER. 25556, workmaster initials for Carl Gustav Simonsson, St. Petersburg, late 19th Century
The brooch was a gift to Ellen Roberts, who was the dresser to Princess Alexandra of Wales (later Queen), by Tsar Alexander III and Marie Feodorovna. The gift was given on visit to England by the Imperial couple. According to the Royal Archives Ellen Roberts left service in 1874 but remained a friend and companion to Queen Alexandra. (2)
