Lot Essay

Jodocus Hondius acquired the old copperplates of the Mercator atlas and started to re-issue them. This map was first published in 1606 as one of the 37 new maps engraved for Hondius' expanded Dutch edition of his Atlas sive Cosmographicae or the Mercator-Hondius atlas as it is more commonly called.
