Lot Essay

Professor Dr Helmut Börsch-Supan has confirmed the attribution to Schnorr von Carolsfeld, after studying the original, in a letter dated 17 March 2006. The drawing was used in preparation for the artist's Bilderbibel (Illustrated Bible) published in 1860. This project was inspired by 15th and 16th Century illustrations by artists such as Dürer, Cranach and Holbein who took advantage of advances in commercial printmaking to illustrate biblical texts in woodcuts and copper engravings.
