ILLUMINATED INITIALS P AND F, cuttings from ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPTS ON VELLUM
[Italy, Tuscany, c.1170]
The initial P 190 x 80mm overall; initial F 260 x 77mm overall. Not necessarily from the same manuscript, both have staves of red- and blue-patterned segments bordered with yellow wash and a blue or blue and green outer ground, the infills with curling tendrils of white-vine and, in the F, a horned mask-face. The F opened Book of Kings Chapter II Factum est autem and on the verso a further 8 lines in a round proto-gothic Italian hand (F folds and creases, both with edges lightly pasted to mounts).
In the style classed as 'late geometric', these intensely coloured and highly decorative initials are typical of Tuscan illumination of the third quarter of the 12th century: K. Berg, Studies in Tuscan Twelfth-Century Illumination, Oslo 1968. (2)
