AUTHOR PORTRAIT, in an initial I cut from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM

[Italy, probably Bologna, first half 14th century]
155 x 59mm. A figure of an author wearing academic dress, holding a book and standing against a blue background with foliage terminals that forms the initial I. On the reverse script of two sizes shows that the cutting came from glossed manuscript, perhaps a legal text produced for use at the university of Bologna, the great centre of legal studies during the Middle Ages (losses of pigment from collar and mantle).

FOOL WITH A SHIELD, perhaps an initial C, cutting from an ILLUMINATED CHOIRBOOK ON VELLUM, [Italy, perhaps Tuscany, c.1300], 112 x 70mm overall, a blue-faced wraith-like figure in a pink robe with a gray and orange hood set against a blue ground. Traces of red music staves at the top and a large initial from the rubric on the verso show that this initial comes from a choirbook (pigment loss from figure's shield). (2)
