CALENDAR OF OBITS, in Latin, DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER
[?France], 1523
315 x 210mm. 36 leaves and 2 blanks, contemporary foliation, large decorative initial letters marking the days of the week (letters A-G) coloured in red and yellow, the name of the month as a running header in red, the text in Latin in an elegant cursive hand (some wear to margins). Limp vellum, a re-used document of title of 1508.

The calendar, which must have been prepared by a parish priest for his own use, simply lists the anniversaries of the deaths presumably of parishioners occuring on each day of the year 1523, together with the 'censa seu pensione' [rent or pension] paid to the church for celebrating the obits (typically between 5 and 12 solidi or sous). The manuscript, which can only have served for a single year, is remarkable for its neat and painstaking execution.
