[PAPIER-MÂCHÉ BINDING.] Parables of Our Lord. London: Longman & Co., 1847.

8o (160 x 115 mm). 16 chromolithographic leaves and 1 leaf letterpress. Contemporary papier-mâché by J. & J. Leighton with a small central scene illustrating the parable of the sower, surrounded by a ribbon bearing the title and a foliate border with the Hebrew symbols in the corners, black roan spine letterered in blind. Provenance: purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 23 November 1962.

A fine example. The heads in the corners were copied from the stonework at St. Paul's Cathedral. This is one of the earliest examples of this style were papier-mâché was covered with a black plaster composition and molded to form a medieval wooden book cover in the "monastic style." The covers were made by Jackson, later the Jackson Mill-Board Co. and the binding done by Leighton. McLean Victorian Publishers' Book-Bindings in Paper, pp.12-13 and 51.
