[MUSIC BOX.] Swiss, 19th century.

Concealed inside a hollowed book, PIGEAU, Cours élémentaire de code civil... tome second, Paris, 1818. 8o. Contemporary calf-backed boards (slightly rubbed). Provenance: purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 27 August 1956.

Only the first 20 pages of the book are present; the remaining have been cut out and pasted together to accomodate a Swiss music box, complete with the key to wind it up. The music box dates to ca 1850 and plays four distinct tunes. Swiss music boxes in the form of books are mentioned by W.H. Blumenthal in Bookman's Bedlam, p.69.
