Founded in 1836, the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company, sailed from London to Spain, Portugal and the Mediterranean. In 1845 P & O services were extended to Singapore and the Far East and in 1852 they started a bi-monthly Singapore to Australia service. Southampton - Capetown - Australia sailings were started in 1853 and the opening of Suez Canal in 1869 shortened the journey times considerably.
The paddle steamer Euxine was built by Caird and Co., Greenock in 1847 and weighed 1,164 tons. Sir Edward Bates, 1st Bt., (1816-96) bought the steamer in 1868 for 4,275 pounds and he had it converted to a sailing vessel by Laird & Co., Birkenhead.
