James Sant (1820-1916) was one of the most celebrated portraitists of his age and in 1872 crowned his career by becoming official portrait painter to Queen Victoria. Sant was the longest living Royal Academy member since its inception in 1768 and had been almost consistently represented from 1840 until 1904, exhibiting over two hundred works.
