Lot Essay

After training in Amsterdam under Albert van Everdingen, van Edema travelled to London circa 1670, where his highly decorative imaginary and topographical landscapes were well received. His extensive travelling influenced the wild vision of nature that is so prevalent in his work, and his breath taking mountains, rivers, cascades and rocky gorges found favour with the aristocratic collectors of the Restoration court such as the Duke of Sutherland and the Earl of Radnor.
