Lot Essay

William Laud (1573-1645) was Archbishop of Canterbury and a fervent supporter of Charles I, whom he encouraged to believe in divine right. His support for the absolute monarchy of the King, his aggressive high Church policies and the persecution of his opponents led to his beheading in the midst of the English Civil War.
