No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VA… Read more The following three items of French furniture (lots 34-36) were possibly acquired by George Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Marquess of Stafford and 1st Duke of Sutherland (1785-1833), who was British Ambassador to Paris from 1790 to 1792. The Duke, who lived at Stafford House in London and Dunrobin Castle in the Scottish Highlands, was a keen collector of pictures and furniture and his years in Paris just after the Revolution must have enabled him to purchase many treasures.

The later serpentine shaped moulded giallo marble top above a pierced waived frieze carved with rockwork and foliage, on scrolling legs joined by a pierced rockwork and foliate cartouche, regilt, loss to one leg
