Lot Essay

With its pieds en console, shaped back and refined carved decoration, this elegant armchair is characteristic of the oeuvre of the celebrated menuisier Georges Jacob (1739-1814). Identical legs often feature on pieces stamped by Jacob, including chaises, fauteuils and also fauteuils de bureau, including the two illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 2002, p.462.
A set of six virtually identical fauteuils stamped by Jacob were sold from the Allard de Meeus collection, Paris, 6 June 1910, lot 174 while other armchairs, attributed to Jacob, are in the Musée Carnavalet, illustrated in A. Forray-Carlier, Le Mobilier du Musée Carnavalet, Paris, 2000, p.192.
